Cancelling your wedding with nonrefundable deposits: your options in Los Angeles
Before you write off your deposits: postponing, transferring, negotiating credit, and wedding insurance. A calm, practical checklist.
Updated 2026-10-18. General information. Not legal advice.
1. Read before you call
Pull every contract and note the cancellation clause, the postponement clause, any assignment clause and what you've paid. Note deadlines: some contracts get more expensive as the date gets closer.
2. Ask about postponing
Many vendors will move you to another date for a fee. If you might still get married later, that can preserve more value than cancelling.
3. Ask about transferring
If you won't use the date, ask whether another couple can take it over. Vendors often prefer a filled date. Get any yes in writing, naming the new couple.
4. Check insurance
If you bought wedding insurance, read the covered reasons and file early. Insurers set their own rules; ask them directly.
5. List it
If transfer is allowed or the vendor is open to it, list your booking on Unrefundable for free. You pay a success fee only if it actually transfers.
